Fall 2012 Final #5b

Postby Ronica_Patel_3G » Wed Nov 30, 2016 8:03 pm

Write the formula for the following coordination compound.
triamminetrichloronickel(IV) sulfate
answer: [Ni(Cl3)(NH3)3]2 SO4

I understood how they got everything except for the 2 outside of the bracket. Can someone explain why it is 2 because I got 1? Thank you!

Hi there,
Nickel is +4 in this problem while Chlorine is -1 x 3 atoms (total charge -3) and NH3 is neutral, giving a charge for everything in the brackets as +1. Since SO4 is -2, you would need two of the compound within the brackets to have a neutral charge on the whole compound.
Hope that helps!
