Ligand Names

Postby Kyra Dingle 1B » Tue Nov 21, 2017 2:35 pm

There is a table in the book that includes a list of common ligands and their corresponding formulas. Are we required to know all of these for the test or final?

I don't think we would since he never said anything about memorizing them. For the midterm we didn't and I'm assuming we won't need to know for the final but I'm not 100% sure.

I'm not 100% sure, but I would memorize the most common ones out of that list or at least the ones that were used in HW problems that he assigned.

It seems that for the anionic ligands in the table, they can be named without memorization as the same rule applies: change the -ide to -ido, the -ate to -ato, and the -ite to -ito. As far as the neutral ligands, we should definitely know the prefix for water and ammonia as those were on the homework problems. I'm not too sure about the other neutral ligands.

Hope this helps!

I think you should remember the coordination compound names from Lavelle's website.

Should we just memorize the names the old way instead of the new naming system?
