Polydentate

Postby Tiffany Cao 1D » Fri Nov 24, 2017 4:38 pm

What are polydentates and how are they related to ligands. How does CO3^2- in example 17.33 have polydentate ligands?

polydentate ligands are ligands that have multiple bonding sites. Carbonate is monodentate, because it has 120 degrees between its oxygens so both don't bind to the same metal. But sometimes, carbonate bonds to two different metals, making it bidentate.

Polydentates have multiple bonding sites. CO3^2 has multiple spots because the lone pairs of its oxygen allows for different bonding spots.

How do you tell if a ligand is polydendate? Do you have to draw it out or can you tell just by the name? And when you draw it out, what are you looking for?
