Problem 17.31 d

Postby Jessica Yang 1J » Mon Nov 27, 2017 5:15 pm

I thought we named ligands in alphabetical order, so why did the book list bisoxalato before the diaqua in problem 17.31d? I know we are also supposed to disregard the prefixes when putting the ligands in alphabetical order as well.

That might have just been a book error, or maybe a rare exception to the rule, because according to Toolbox 17.1 we do name ligands in alphabetical order!

On a separate note, why is diaqua enclosed in parentheses? What does this signify?

The solutions manual actually listed diaqua before bisoxalato. This is in alphabetical order because, disregarding prefixes, the a in aqua precedes the o in oxalato.
