naming with anions

Postby Alyssa Pelak 1J » Tue Nov 28, 2017 11:01 am

For a coordination complex such as [Cr(NH3)3(H2O)3]Cl3 is the anion at the end named with a prefix or not?

So for this one, would the name be triamminetriaquachromium(III) trichloride or triamminetriaquachromium (III) chloride.

Thank you!

The end anion is not named with a prefix so it would just end with chloride

This makes sense because in order for it to be a neutral compound, there must be three chlorine atoms. The chromium atom has a +3 charge, so there must be three chlorine atoms, each with a -1 charge. "Trichloride would be redundant."
