Homework 17.29(B)

Postby Nha Dang 2I » Thu Nov 30, 2017 2:21 am

17.29 Name each of the following complex ions and determine the oxidation number of the metal: (b) [Co(NH3)6]3+

Can someone explain why cobalt has a +3 oxidation number? or how we know the oxidation number of NH3?

We determine the oxidation number of the metal with the equation
(# of metals)(oxidation # of metal) + (# of ligands)(charge of each ligand) = charge of ion

so for 17.29 (B)
# of metals = 1
oxidation # of metal = x (what we are trying to find)
# of ligands = 6
charge of ligand = 0 (which is given by Table 17.4 on page. 742)
charge of ion = 3

so our equation is (1)(x) + (6)(0) = 3
