Order of Chemicals/Ligands

Postby mayapartha_1D » Mon Dec 04, 2017 9:53 pm

Can anyone explain the order of the ligands in naming? When you are presented with a coordination compound, what is the normal order for naming the ligands and other atoms?

Thanks!

When naming a coordination compound, you name the ligands of the overall molecule in alphabetical order, regardless of the prefix that tells you how many of the ligands are present. For example, if you have Cl- and (H2O)2 as ligands, you would still put diaqua first before chloro, because A comes before C alphabetically.
