Oxidation Numbers and how to get them

Postby Fenared Ortiz 3K » Thu Dec 07, 2017 2:14 pm

I am having trouble in understanding how to find the oxidation numbers of elements in chemical solutions involving ligands. What is the process to go about in finding oxidation numbers of the metals with ligands?

Equate the sum of the charge of each ligand and x to be equal to the charge on the complex ion where x is the oxidation no. of the central metal atom. Solve for x.

You can find the oxidation numbers by identifying the charged ligands first and determining what charge that leaves the compound at. And then see what the given total charge of the compound should be and calculate the oxidation number based on that (whether the compound is neutral or 2-, etc.).

How do we find out the charge for the ligand?

The charge of the ligand is listed on Table 17.4 of the textbook
