Memorizing all the names???

Postby Mary Becerra 2D » Sat Dec 09, 2017 9:08 pm

Do we need to know the full name of en (ethylenediamine) or can we just put "en" when naming a compound? I've been told that we do but some people and we don't by others so I'm confused.

I think you have to know the whole name incase the test gives you the formula of a complex and you have to name the whole complex. I think you only use the abbreviation when writing the formula, not the full name.

When naming a compound, you can definitely just use (en) or (dien) or whatever the shorthand may be; however you should probably also know the whole name just in case.

My discussion's TA advised that either way would probably be ok.

No, they will be given or not shown during the exam.
