Can someone define what a coordination compound is exactly?

A coordination compound basically consists of a central atom with ligands attached to it by covalent bonds

Are ligands always nonmetal atoms?

Coordination compound is where Ligands( lone pairs donar, lewis base)attached to a Transition Metal ion that forms coordinative bonds between them.
Ligands can be differnet kinds, as long as they have long pairs of electrons to donate. They can be anions like Cl-,Br-,F-, they can also be neutral e.g. NH3

As far as I've learned, they are. But there could be exceptions? (I could be wrong, but I've also encountered only nonmetal atoms)

is the product of a Lewis acid-base reaction in which neutral molecules or anions (called ligands) bond to a central metal atom (or ion)
