Brackets in Coordinate Compound Formula

Postby Olivia Young 1A » Thu Nov 29, 2018 6:41 pm

When looking at the formula for coordinate compounds, part of the formula is inside brackets while other parts are not. I was wondering what the difference is between those two parts and how to distinguish between them. Thanks!

The formula on the inside of the brackets refers to atoms that are within the coordination sphere and connected to the central atom. Those outside are not.

the species outside the brackets are not covalently bonded to anything in the coordination sphere, they are just closely associated with the coordination sphere due to intermolecular electrostatic forces
