Transition metal oxidation states

Postby Deepika Pugalenthi 1A » Thu Nov 29, 2018 7:37 pm

Why do transition metals have many oxidation states?

I am pretty sure that it is because of valence electrons, and there are multiple ways to make transition metals stable.
Also - a different oxidation state can make certain molecules neutral and transition metals are the atoms that can change sign most easily...at least that's my understanding.

I believe that transition metals can have multiple oxidation states because of their electrons in the 3d orbitals.

Transition metals have several free electrons in their outer shell that are free to react with other elements to form bonds.
