Is there a rule for which ligand should be named first?

You name the ligands in a coordination compound in alphabetical order.

To follow up, is it alphabetical order by prefix or by the names of the ligands?

It is alphabetical order by the name of the element, so monochloro would come before dioxide. Hope that helps.

With a transition metal, it appears first in the coordination compound formula. However when you name it with the ligands, it appears last, after the ligands alphabetically.

If there are multiple ligands, the order the ligands are named should follow alphabetical order. If the coordinate compound is PtCl2(NO2)2, then the Cl would be named before the NO2.
