Polyatomic ions and naming

Do we have to memorize polyatomic ions and their charges in order to name a coordination compound that contains one?

I think we should probably be familiar with the main ones which are in a chart on page 724 of the 7th edition book!

There's a list of ions under Naming Coordination Compounds on the 14A website. I don't necessarily think you should memorize them all but just being familiar with them is good. We've discussed most of them in class at length already (CN-, SO4^2-, etc.)

It would also be helpful if you could figure out the other polyatomic charges through the ones you already know. For example in [Co(NH3)4(OH2)2]Br3, if you knew that the charge of NH3 and OH2 (or H20) was 0, you could figure out that the charge of Co is +3.

It would be helpful to know the charges of the more common polyatomic ions, especially for determining the oxidation state of the transition metal in a coordination compound.

I know some are already expected of us to know. Overall, my TA said its highly recommended that you do know them.

The list of polyatomic ions in the 6th edition is found in the back of the book on page A31.
