cyano vs cyanido

Postby Fionna Shue 4L » Fri Dec 07, 2018 11:15 am

What's the difference between cyano and cyanido? For example in Potassium tetracyanonickelate(II), why is it cyano and not cyanido?

Cyanido is the "newer term" of cyano, so basically they are the same thing, you will see both but they mean the same thing. Similar to how you can use either chloro or chlorido, you just pick one and stick to it so don't use them both at the same time.

During my Discussion, my TA (Ben) said that either would be acceptable.

What properties of cyanide makes it poisonous to humans?
