when do you add -ate to the end of a compound's name ?

You don't add -ate when naming. When anions end with -ate, you change the ending from -ate to -ato to name the complex (sulfate->sulfato).

If it's a coordination compound that overall is neutral, but the complex is negative you add -ate to the end. More specifically, you replace the ending of the metal name with -ate.

After naming the ligands, name the central metal. If the complex ion is an anion, the name of the transition metal ends with the suffix "-ate." If the complex ion is a cation, the metal is named same as the element.

You give the central transition metal an -ate ending when it is the anion of the coordination compound.

For example [Ni(CN)5]3- has a negative overall charge so you would add -ate to the end of nickel.
