Naming Compounds (general question)
Are there specific compounds we should memorize that will be most commonly seen in this class that we should memorize? Would we have to put two elements together and then name them for a test in the future?

Re: Naming Compounds (general question)
Hi! My TA made it clear that until we learn how to name compounds, the tests will always give you both the name and the formula. If I had to guess, I would say that we are learning it next unit, which includes ionic and covalent bonds as one of the topics.

My TA recommended learning polyatomic ions, which will help you determine certain formulas from word problems. Here's a link to a few common ones: http://www.iun.edu/~cpanhd/C101webnotes ... salts.html

Re: Naming Compounds (general question)
Polyatomic ions are expected for us to be familiar with, so I would say study those! I know the prefixes/suffixes all correspond to the different formations like nitrOUS acid (HNO2) vs nitrIC acid (HNO3) and should be the same across the board for other compounds, maybe that will make it easier to learn/memorize! Good luck!

Re: Naming Compounds (general question)
unless it is specified, it is unlikely that we have to memorize any for now

Re: Naming Compounds (general question)
memorization is most likely not necessary, and if it is needed, it will probably be given to us
Re: Naming Compounds (general question)
From the homework questions, it seems like we do. I'm worried that we do?
Re: Naming Compounds (general question)
My TA said that if it is a compound we haven't seen much of, they will provide it for us. But, he said it would be unlikely for us to have to know compounds names. The only ones that they'll expect you to know are compounds like CO2, H20, NH3, etc. The ones we've been seeing in review problems and on his slides. But, of course, I'm not 100% certain.

As for hw questions, I think the reason they do this is because we have access to look them up. But, I don't think you'll have to worry about it for the exam being that they can't expect us to know the exact compound name for something we don't commonly see or use. My TA says that they look over the questions that Lavelle writes to give input on whether or not they think it's fair to expect us to know something. And I'm sure if he had put some complex compound name without its molecular formula, they'd say something about it.
