HW 9c.9
Is [PtCl2(en)2]2+ coordination number 4 or 6? Does en form a chelate that binds to the platinum more than once?

The coordination number should be 6. I believe this is because the chloride ligands are monodentate while the ethylene diamine ligands are bidentate.

The formula for ethylenediamine is C2H4(NH2)2. If you picture the Lewis structure in your head or draw it out, you can see there are 2 different lone pairs, so yes it's bidentate. This means that there are two covalent bonds for every ethylenediamine, making the coordination number 6.

6 because en has two binding sites. Because it is a bidentate and there are two of them, it binds at four sites. Add the four to the two Cl sites and you get 6.
