Naming Convention of Metal Anions

Postby Naren_Ramesh_4F » Wed Nov 27, 2019 10:20 am

Is there a specific naming convention for the metal anions that end in -ate? For example, why is the Nickel anion nickelate and not nickate but the cobalt anion is cobate and not cobaltate?

The metal anion receives the -ate suffix when the coordination compound is negative overall

Add -ate to the end of the transition metal's name if the charge within the brackets is negative.

If we do use the -ate, would be cobate or cobaltate?
