Coordination compounds vs complexes

Postby Isabel Day 1D » Sat Nov 30, 2019 7:33 pm

Is there a difference between complexes and coordination compounds? The textbook uses these 2 terms often and I'm wondering if the have the exact same meaning.

A complex consists of a central metal ion that ligands attach to through coordinate covalent bonds. A coordination compound consists of at least one complex. However, I have also seen these two used interchangeably.

Just going off of the language in the textbook, it seems that the two terms are interchangeable.
