Cis & Trans

Postby Abigail Carter 4G » Sun Dec 01, 2019 4:30 pm

I understand that cis means the ligands are on the same side, whereas trans means they are opposite each other but do we have to include these prefixes when we are writing the names?

It should be written out in order to specify the difference between the molecular structure. The molecule is the same therefore the only difference is the position of the molecules and the cis and trans prefixes specify which position you are referring to.

If you were to include cis or trans in the naming would this just come at the front of the entire name?

I believe that the molecular name should stay the same. Cis and trans are used only to specify which isomer you are referring to.
