9C.1 Name each of the following complex ions and identify the
oxidation number of the metal:
(a) [Fe(CN)6]4-
(b) [Co(NH3)6]3+
(c) [Co(CN)5(OH2)]2-
(d) [Co(NH3)5(SO4)]+

How do you do name these compounds? I've been trying but there's just so much going on I don't know where to begin.

To figure out the charge of the metal you can look at the ligands and overall charge of the complex. Since there are 6 CN- and the overall charge is 4-, that means the charge of Fe is 2+.
To name the compound, you should write out the name for it by beginning with each ligand, in alphabetical order, with the metal and its charge following. So, for A, [Fe(CN)6]4- since there are 6 CN- or hexacyano, and iron which is ferrate, hence HexacyanoFerrate (II) ion. The charge of the metal is written in Roman numerals inside parentheses. Since this molecule has an overall negative charge, the metal will need an -ate added to it, as shown.
