The oxidation number of a metal can be determined by looking at the ligands bonded to the central metal atom in a coordination sphere and the overall charge of the complex. We're supposed to memorize the charges of common ligands as given on page 724 of the text book. The charges of the ligands plus the charge of the central atom must equal the overall charge of the complex.
