Oxidation States

Postby rachelle1K » Mon Dec 02, 2019 8:13 am

How do I find the oxidation state of a molecule? Does it require drawing out the Lewis structure? Thanks!

Here's a video that will give you the basics on how to determine oxidation states/numbers. Hope this helps!

It has to do with fulfilling the octet and usually occurs in ionic compounds.

Finding the oxidation state of an element can be accomplished through finding the charges of other molecules in the compound and subtracting them from the overall charge of the complex. Since the oxidation state (aka charge of the element) + the charges of the other compounds in the complex = the overall charge of the compounds, you can use the charges that are given in order to determine the charge of the metal/its oxidation state.
