Coordination Compound: Cation or Anion
If the complex ion (what is inside the brackets) is the cation, will it always be written first? And, vice versa if it is the anion?
Re: Coordination Compound: Cation or Anion
This is the norm with ionic compounds (cations written before anions). I can't say if your answer will be marked wrong if you put it the other way, but it isn't hard to put the cation before the anion (if you don't know the charge on the complex ion, just use the charge on the other ion and work from there).

Usually the cation is written first before the anion, it's just standard convention. I don't think there's anything wrong with switching that order other than it would look weird.

When writing the formulas for coordination compounds, you should start with the complex cation and put that in brackets, then follow it with the anion. Putting it the other way, while it may not be wrong, is abnormal so you should just avoid writing the formula that way.
