How do we tell if a molecule is polydentate?

A polydentate will have multiple sites where the central metal can bond to. Common examples are ethylenediamine, oxalate, diethylenetriamine, and EDTA.
As you can see, ethylenediamine has two Ns with lone pairs that can bind to the metal atom.

What is the best way to approach a problem asking if a molecule is polydentate? Is it necessary to draw out the entire lewis structure to determine where the lone pair electrons are located? Are there any shortcuts for when it is an especially large molecule?
