cations and anions with naming

Postby Savannah Mance 4G » Tue Dec 03, 2019 11:40 pm

I'm trying to name K2 [Ni(CN)4] but I was confused because I know you're supposed to start the name with the prefix for how many ligands there are, so in this case tetra since there are 4 CN. Then, I thought I was supposed to do the TM cation name but I was confused because in the formula isn't the potassium the cation since the [Ni(CN)4] has an overall -2 charge making it the anion? So, would it be tetracyanonickel(II)-potassium? or would it be potassium tetracyanonickelate?

The second name you said, potassium tetracyanonickelate (II) is the correct naming.
