Tips on Naming

Postby Sunia Akaveka 4I » Wed Dec 04, 2019 2:01 am

Whenever I look at the chemical names given in the homework problems, they always overwhelm me! Can someone please give me some tips on how to easily name chemicals such as the ones in problems like 9C.1 and 9C.3

Lavelle provided a table that had the name "translations" to how you should name your coordination compounds so my tip would just be to memorize those with flashcards or something. Other than that, you name your cation first and then your anion and you start with the ligand depending on whether it's in the cation or anion

There is a sheet on Lavelle's website called "Naming Coordination Compounds" which gives you a list of the common compounds/ligands in Chem 14A and their names. I put these on flashcards and that helped me a lot.
