Abbreviations (oxalato)

Postby J Medina 2I » Sat Dec 07, 2019 12:19 pm

When writing the formula for a coordination compound containing a ligand that can be abbreviated, such as sodium bisoxalato(diaqaua)ferrate(III) containing oxalato, are we able to also write the abbreviation in the formula. For example can this coordination compound be written as:

Na[Fe(OH2)2(ox)2]

or does it have to be written as: Na[Fe(OH2)2(C2O4)2] ?

pretty sure to get the answer completely correct you have to write it out fully (so your 2nd answer would be right)

I think Lyndon said that you can use either. I think it would be useful to just know the coordination compound formula though in case it isn't given as oxalato.
