Molecular formula for long ligands

Postby Annie Chantasirivisal_4G » Sat Dec 07, 2019 3:17 pm

Sorry if this has been asked already but I can't find the answer :c

Does anyone know if in the final we are allowed to use abbreviations of long ligands such as (en) instead of NH2CH2CH2NH2 when writing out the molecular formulas from being given the name of the coordination compounds?
For example, if the name was dichlorobis(ethylenediamine)Platinum(IV) chloride, could we just write [Pt(en)2Cl2]Cl2, or do we have to write out [Pt(NH2CH2CH2NH2)2Cl2]Cl2?
Conversely, if given [Pt(NH2CH2CH2NH2)2Cl2]Cl2, can we just say dichlorobis(en)Platinum(IV) chloride, or do we have to write out dichlorobis(ethylenediamine)Platinum(IV) chloride?

What does Dr. Lavelle prefer?

Thank you so much!

We are allowed to write the abbreviations for the specified ligands from the naming sheet

Yes, you can write the abbreviations for the compounds. As for what Dr. Lavelle prefers, I'm sure he's okay with using the abbreviations if he allows it for the test.
