Wrong order

Postby Donavin Collins 1F » Sat Dec 07, 2019 5:26 pm

Does anyone know if we would be marked down for writing out the compound or the name in the wrong order? Is there a specific order that they're supposed to be in?

The ligand names in a coordination compound should be in alphabetical order.

Coordination compounds need to be written in the right order. The right order is ligands first (in alphabetical order but not including the roman prefixes) then the metal comes after.

In a coordination complex?
If you are writing the formula for a coordination complex, the ligands do not have to be in a particular order, as long as the central metal cation is first, and whatever is in the coordination sphere is in brackets.
If you're going from the formula to writing the whole name, then yes, the ligands must be written in alphabetical order (ignoring the prefix), then the cation.
