When you are naming, when should you use cobalt and cobaltate??

if the complex (so the central atom and its ligands) has an overall negative charge then you add the ending -ate.

You add the -ate when the complex is negatively charged. When it is neutral or positively charged, you leave the name as it normally is.

You should only add be using the the ending -ate when the coordination compound has an overall negative charge.
