Oxidation number of ligands

Postby Yun Su Choi 3G » Mon Nov 30, 2020 5:14 pm

Are we expected to know oxidation numbers of common ligands? For example that CN has oxidation number of -1. Also do we have to memorize the list of neutral ligands along with their names?

It is probably a good idea since on the test you won't have access to any notes and such to reference the table with the compositions, names, and oxidation numbers.

Yeah, I think it's also a good idea to know those simple oxidation numbers because we might asked to find the oxidation number of the metal ion in the coordination compound as a whole.

It's probably better to know those, but also probably better do just do enough practice problems and look at enough compounds (and names of compounds) so that you internalize them without having to outright memorize them.

It's better if you know them, but you probably won't be tested on knowing the exact names and numbers and rather how to use them.

I think it would make it easier if you were familiar with the common charges/oxidation numbers of the ligands. Rather than just trying to memorize them alone, it might be better to just do more practice problems so you can remember their oxidation numbers from seeing them in problems many times.

I'm not sure if we're required to memorize them, but I think we should be able to recognize some of the simpler ones.

I think we should be able to recognize a few, but the test could possibly have the oxidation number of the ligands given to us so that we only have to solve for the oxidation number of the cation, but this is just a guess.

I believe on the final we would be likely to calculate for the oxidation number given a chemical formula. For example [Ni(CN)4]^2- , in which case it will be helpful if you remembered that CN has a charge of -1. The answer to the example is that the oxidation number is +2. This was on one of the UA's worksheet, so it is a fair test question, in my opinion.

to add: there is a chart on sapling that lists common ligands and their names in the context of coordination compounds. It also lists common oxidation states as well

I think we should have a general idea of the oxidation numbers of common ligands but I think that will just come automatically from doing homework/practice problems.

It will be pivotal for us to remember by ourselves because we will not be able to use notes on our final exam.
