Hi,
I just needed some clarification to the naming of this problem. The correct answer as listed in the textbook is "aquapentacyanocobaltate (III) ion" but wouldn't the answer be "aquacarbonylpentacyano" instead because the c and the o form "CO" rather than "Co"?

I see what you're saying. However, I think it is meant to be Co (cobalt) and it may just be a typo. Otherwise, there would be no metal to bond to.

It should be Cobalt, not a carbonyl group because cobalt would be the metal that the complex is formed around.

It is Cobalt because there needs to be a transition metal cation in the sphere
