en is shorthand for ethylenediamine. It is a bidentate ligand with the formula NH2CH2CH2NH2.

dien is shorthand for diethylenetriamine. It is a tridentate ligand with the formula NH2CH2CH2NHCH2CH2NH2.

Is this something common that we will need to know going forward? I always get so confused when I see it come up.

### Re: what does (en) mean?

I think we do need to memorize en since it is a common ligand that we will probably use going forward. Its also on the common ligand table.

Where can we find the common ligand table used for this class?

en stands for ethylenediamine, which is a bidendate ligand.

### Re: what does (en) mean?

I think it is helpful to know that en/ethylenediamine has no charge, it is neutral.

There is a link to a ligand table on Professor Lavelle's website by the periodic table link I believe.

### Re: what does (en) mean?

en (ethylenediamine H2NCH2CH2NH2) is a bidenate. So it has two donor atoms, and therefore contributes two to the coordination number as a complex.

### Re: what does (en) mean?

Hi! en is shorthand for ethylenediamine. The formula of this ligand is NH2CH2CH2NH2. Hope it helps.

### Re: what does (en) mean?

en stands for ethylenediamine, is a bidentate ligand (involves 2 electron pairs), is a neutral molecule, and has the molecular formula NH2CH2CH2NH2.

### Re: what does (en) mean?

I saw this in the sapling homework! (en) is an abbreviation for a compound, commonly called ethylenediamine. It's a bidentate ligand and its formula is NH2CH2CH2NH2! Hope this helps!

### Re: what does (en) mean?

Adding on to what everyone said above, there are some really helpful tables in the textbook under the 9C section that outline common ligands! They're really helpful when trying to memorize all of the different ones. But, as others have said, en is a bidentate ligand that is short for ethylenediamine!

In one of the sapling homework problems (question 5 for me), the feedback includes a table (chempendix) of ligands. You can check it out to see some common ligand names and their denticity.

do you guys know if we'll need to know this by memory for this class/series? wondering if it's something I should look at before the exam in case it shows up

### Re: what does (en) mean?

(en) stands for ethylenediamine. It is one of the neutral ligands that we will have to know for the class. Someone earlier posted a link to the worksheet showing all the ligands we should be familiar with, so you should look over that as well :)

### Re: what does (en) mean?

In $[Cd(en)Br_2]$, (en) is meant to represent ethylenediamine, a bidentate ligand with the molecular formula $NH_2CH_2CH_2NH_2$. Just for future reference, you can always look at the ligand table in Sapling's Chempendix or the one on Professor Lavelle's website if you need help as well.

### Re: what does (en) mean?

it means ethylenediamine. Basically it can form a double bond and so you would double the coordination number. But I don't how would it affect the oxidation state. Anyone know?

### Re: what does (en) mean?

Will we need to have this memorized? Also does anyone know if we can use the common ligand table on the final or if this type of information will be given to us in the question?

I know that the final is closed book, so I'm preparing to only get a periodic table and formula sheet.
