Sapling 9 #1

Postby Nina Fukui 2J » Thu Dec 03, 2020 9:29 pm

[Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl2
To name this compound, I took the ligand ammonia and there are 5 of them so I named this part as pentaammine, then saw that there are 3 chlorines so trichloro, and lastly the metal is cobalt, so I thought the systematic name would be Pentaamminetrichlorocobalt(III). But this seems to be wrong. Can somebody explain to me the process better and what I did wrong?

Because the Cl2 is outside the brackets, it is named separately from the molecule in the brackets. Therefore, the name is pentaamminechlorocobalt (III) chloride. If it were [Co(NH3)5Cl3], then you would be correct.

I agree with the answer given above. The Cl2 that is outside of the brackets is not a part of the coordination sphere, so you would write it separately instead of grouping it with the chlorine inside the brackets. Thus, instead of it being trichloro, it would be simply chloro to represent the chlorine inside the bracket and chloride to represent the Cl2 outside of the brackets. So, you would end up with pentaamminechlorocobalt (III) chloride.

Hi!

The name of the compound should be pentaamminechlorocobalt(III) chloride.

so the Cl2 is outside of the brackets yes, why do we name it after everything else and not before?

I am not sure as to why we name it after, but I know this is a rule when naming coordination compounds. Anything outside of the brackets is named as a separate word, at the end.

Hi, just as everyone else said, the chlorine inside the bracket and outside of the bracket do not combine. So there is only one chlorine in the bracket and therefore the name should be pentaamminechlorocobalt(III) chloride.

I agree with the previous posts. Whatever is inside the brackets stays as one word and whatever is outside is named separately. That's how I remember it. Thus, the name would be pentaamminechlorocobalt (III) chloride, where the Cl2 is addressed afterwards.
