When do you know when do use -ate at the end of the name of a compound. For example, [Co(CN)5(OH2)]2- is auqa pentacyanocobaltate, while [Co(NH3)5(SO4)]+ is penta aminesulfatocobalt. Thanks!

I believe you use -ate when the whole compound has a negative charge like how aquapentacyanocobaltate has a -2 charge but pentaamminesulfatocobalt has a +1 charge.

yes you have to check if the TM compound has an overall negative charge. It's easy in these questions because it is just the anion but sometimes when there is a cation (like Na or K) present the negative charge isn't written and you have to look at the two components separately to realize the TM compound has a net negative charge.

Only use -ate for negative charge, and neutral/positive compounds will just end in the name of the last part

You would have to add -ate to the end of the metal name whenever the compound is negative. Keep in mind the few exceptions such as iron -> ferrate, and add the oxidation state in parentheses to the end.

-ate is used when the complex ion has a negative charge. Usually, the coordination compound will contain some metal cation in front of the complex ion in the bracket.

When using -ate we have to first look at whether the entire compound has an overall negative or positive charge. If it has an overall negative charge then we would use -ate when naming the compound.

It is because auqa pentacyanocobaltate has a negative charge. Ate- is applied for TM compounds with negative charges.

-ate is used at the end of the compound's name when its net charge is negative. Otherwise, or when it's neutrally or positively charged, you don't have any suffix.

-ate is used at the end of a complex ion name when it has a overall negative charge. When the complex ion has a positive charge or no charge at all, -ate is not used in the name.

-ate is used for when a coordination compound has an overall negative charge, in other words, an anion. For instance, if a coordination compound with iron has a negative charge, it would become ferrate.
