oxidation number

Postby Annabella_Amato_1I » Sat Dec 12, 2020 9:40 am

When naming coordination compounds, how do you know what the oxidation number of the central metal ion is?

To find oxidation number you have to look at the overall charge of the compound, charges of the compounds inside of the coordination sphere, and make a formula. For example [Co(CN)5(0H2)]2-, CN has an overall charge of (-1) and (OH2) is neutral so you’d make the equation

X+5(-1)+0=-2

And solve for x, so combats oxidation number is 3+.

You would have to look at the charge of each of the ligands. Then once you figure that out you look at how many there are and then if there is a net charge on the compound you must use the charge of the ligands to figure out what the charge of the metal should be in order to equal that net charge. If there is no charge on the complex then you just make the net charge equal zero.

how can you tell what the charge of the ligands are?

Thank you for this! How would I find the charge of the ligand as well?

Generally, you want to first look at the overall negative charge of the structure, because that is what the all the charges of all the molecules should add up to. Then identify what all the negative charged molecules, and the remaining charge will be the plus on the central molecule.

the overall charge minus any known charges should give you oxidation number.

To find the oxidation number, I just take the overall charge of the compound and then take into account the charges of other elements or compounds within the cation to find the charge of the metal ion.

I think to find the charge of the ligands you'd have to memorize from the chart. I don't know if there's a better way but that's what I did.
