Naming in the Correct Order

Postby alexandrad 3J » Mon Nov 09, 2015 11:15 am

Does it matter which order you name coordination compounds? For example, the question is to name potassium hexacyanoidochromate(III) and the answer is [K3(Cr)(CN)6] but would it matter if you wrote it as [K3(CN)6(Cr)]?

All I know is that the metal is written first in the chemical formula regardless, but the ligands are written first in alphabetical order when naming them so I would assume write them in alphabetical order as well when writing them out in the chemical formula.
