Tips for naming compounds

Postby J_Rodriguez_Dis2k » Fri Nov 13, 2015 4:46 pm

I find it hard trying to figure out the names of compounds. Is there a tip in which i can use to help me name a compound.

1. always name the cation before anion
2. name ligands in alphabetical order then metal atom/ion
(metal atoms/ions are written before ligand in chemical formulas)
get familiar with common ligands
3. greek prefixes used to designate the number for each type of ligand
if ligand already has a greek prefix or is a polydentate ligand (can attach at more than one bonding site) then use prefixes bis-, tris-, tetrakis-, pentakis-
4. after naming ligand, name the central atom
if the complex ion is a cation - the metal is named as its element name
if the complex ion is an anion - the metal will end in the suffix -ate
5 oxidation states will follow the name of the metal
