Formalities in Naming Ligands CN-

Postby Alex Nguyen 3I » Sat Nov 14, 2015 3:01 pm

Is cyanido interchangeable with cyano when naming the ligand CN- in coordination compounds or complexes?

Cyanido follows the new IUPAC naming convention while cyano follows the older naming convention. The use of either is fine, but make sure you also indicate which atom is being bonded to the transition metal if you choose to use cyanido (i.e. cyanido-kC for carbon and cyanido-kN for nitrogen).
