Naming

Postby Miya Eberlein 1J » Sun Nov 15, 2015 10:53 pm

What are the trends for the periodic table with regards to their charges? Like how the row next to the noble gases are all negative 1, what are the trends for the rest of the table?

Group 1 and 2 generally have ionic charges of 1 and 2 because they only have one electron and two electrons respectively in their valence orbitals and as a result the form ions with ionic charges of 1 and 2 respectively. Group 17, the group of halogens, located next to the noble gases have a charge of -1. Group 16 elements have charges of -2, Group 15 elements have charges of -3, Group 14 elements have charges of -4, and Group 13 elements have charges of +3. The transition metals generally have charges that are variable. However, a charge can be determined using the electron configuration of an element.
