Atoms Outside of [ ]

Postby Joana Fang 1K » Fri Nov 26, 2021 7:56 pm

Hi, when naming coordination compounds, does whether the atoms that are outside of [ ] come before or after the [ ] affect the naming. If so, how does it affect naming?

I think if the additional atom is in front, it's a cation, and if it's behind then it's an anion (though that only applies if the coordination compound has a net charge of some sort). Since compounds are named with the cation before anion, I think you would just name it from left to right!

Things outside of the coordination sphere- cations or anions- are named according to general naming rules for ions, not the rules for coordination compounds.

When naming coordination compounds, cations come before the coordination compound, and anions come after the coordination compound. The naming of cations and anions outside of the coordination compound remains as it would with any other compound (e.g. Cl is still chloride rather than chloro).

Everything inside the coordination sphere is named first including the oxidation state for the transition metal. When there are atoms outside of the coordination sphere ([]), then the anion name comes first as it would for an ion. If there is Cl 2H2O outside the [], for example, you would name it "chloride dihydrate."

I think before the [] is cation and after is anion.

When naming atoms outside of [], cations always come before the coordination compound, while anions come after.

Cations come before the [] and the ones after are anions.
