naming memorization tactics
Does anyone have any methods or tactics they use to help memorize the names that correspond to various compounds?

Re: naming memorization tactics
Regarding coordination compounds, they tend to follow a set of rules for their naming. Primarily, anions in the coordination sphere are the first part and they are arranged alphabetically with a prefix before them that corresponds to how many of them are in the coordination sphere. We typically throw -o in place of -ide at the end of them (ie: we would write dichloro instead of dichloride in the coordination sphere). We then add in the cation followed by its oxidation number in parantheses written as Roman numerals. We add -ate to the end of the cation if the coordination compound within the sphere is negative in charge. Finally, we can add in the outside atoms without a prefix. If you meant non-coordinate compounds, there really is no easy way around it.

I recommend studying the graphs in the textbook, specifically toolbox 9C.1 since it gives a rundown of the rules to naming coordination compounds. Memorizing the rules and then doing a bunch of practice problems will help further familiarize you with the naming process.

A combination of doing many practice problems, flashcards, and understanding any rules behind the naming through these methods would be my suggestion.
