Question 1 on the Homework for Week 9

Postby Sydney Rohan 3G » Sun Nov 28, 2021 3:45 pm

I am having trouble with question 1. The question asks you to:

Give the systematic name of this coordination compound. [Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl2

I thought that the name should be pentaammine cobalt chlorine, but that is not right. Can someone please help me?

hi! remember the order of the compounds of the coordination compounds is that the metal should come at the end. also after the metal, remember to also write the oxidation state in Roman numerals in parenthesis. also within the coordination sphere, chlorine is referred to as chloro similar to how fluorine is fluorido. hope this helps!

When naming coordination compounds follow this order... (greek prefix) ligand names in alphabetical order+TM cation name(Roman numerals)

[Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl2 should be pentaammine chloro cobalt (III) chloride.
