Systematic Name & Coordination Compound
Hello! I've had some difficulty naming coordination compounds. All I know is that the name has to do with the coordination number/oxidation state but I don't know how to assign a name to each compound or how that relates. If anyone could explain it to me and what they look at to determine the name I'd really appreciate the help!

Re: Systematic Name & Coordination Compound
I think we first look at the ligands attached to the transition metal, and name those alphabetically, using the prefix for the number of that atom. Make sure the atoms are named by adding an -o to the end of the anion name. Then name the transition metal with its oxidation number.

Hi! I agree with Josh, but I would also like to add that the ligand name goes before the transition metal ion. The ligand names are in alphabetical order and then the transition metal cation name with Roman numerals. Hope this helps!

Hi! If we're asked to name a coordination compound, would we be expected to memorize ligand names or denticities?
