In a coordination compound, what does (en) stand for and how does it affect the coordination number of a metal species?

it stands for ethylenediamine, H2NCH2CH2NH2) which is a bidentate ligand

En is the abbreviation for ethylenediamine, which has the formula C₂H₄(NH₂)₂. The two nitrogen atoms each have one lone pair of electrons, meaning the whole molecule has two binding sites to bind to another metal atom or ion. This makes en a bidentate ligand. So, if a coordination compound contains one en molecule, that en would contribute two bonds to the central atom, which means it would add two to the coordination number of the whole compound.

en stands for Ethylenediamine and it is bidentate, meaning it bonds to two places.
