Ligand Memorization

Postby Ethan Mai 1D » Tue Nov 30, 2021 10:42 pm

There are a lot of ligands out there to memorize. Does anyone have any tips or strategies (e.g. acronyms) to remember all of them?

You don't need to memorize ligands, just the rules! Molecules keep their names except for H2O (aqua), NH3 (amine), carbon monoxide (carbonyl) and
nitrous oxide (nitrosyl). Anionic ligands: take ion name and replace last vowel with an “o”!

To add on to the fact that many molecules keep their names, there are some rules you can use to remember! For example, if the complex in general is negatively charged, you put the suffix -ate after the transition metal.
