ligand formula

Postby Darlene Luu 1H » Thu Dec 02, 2021 12:14 pm

Hi! I just want to know if I wrote the formula for this coordination compound correctly. For potassium diamminetricyanosulfatocuprate(II), is it K [Cu(SO4)(CN)3(NH3)2]3- ? Also, does the order of the formula matter? Thanks!!

Coordination compounds are neutral, so there would be 3 Ks to balance out the -3 charge of the complex ion for K3 [Cu(SO4)(CN)3(NH3)2]. However, everything else is correct! The order of the formula doesn't really matter except that the transition metal has to be written first in the coordination complex.

Hi! I think your answer looks great, except it should be K3 instead of K. The brackets part has an overall -3 charge, but the coordination compound itself should be neutral. Because potassium has a charge of +1, we need 3 potassium to form a neutral compound.
