Naming Coordination Compounds

Postby Chiara Frank » Sat Dec 04, 2021 2:28 am

Hi! When naming coordination compounds, I understand that if the complex is an anion, we would use the -ate suffix. When would we use the -ite suffix? Or rather how would we distinguish when we would use each of these suffixes? Thank you!

-ate normally has one more oxygen than the -ite ions. Such as sulfate being SO4- vs sulfite being SO3-2. Notice how its O4 (sulfATE) vs. O3 (sulfITE).

In terms of coordination compounds, Dr. Lavelle discussed that we should add -ate to the end of the metal's name if the complex has a negative charge.
